Mary Zakarian considered her parents her most important subjects. She painted both of them repeatedly as if seeking to understand the losses they had suffered in their homeland but were unable and unwilling to speak about. Zakarian believed her most important work was the painting she executed of her mother's five heads, entitled "My Mother's Endless Lament." The circular pattern signifies the fact that the genocide survivor's grief and suffering never end.
